چکیده

This paper considers the behavior of pulse-like solutions of length ε 1 to semilinear systems of hyperbolic partial differential equations on the time scale t = O(1/ε) of diffractive geometric optics. The amplitude is chosen so that nonlinear effects influence the leading term in the asymptotics. For pulses of larger amplitude so that the nonlinear effects are pertinent for times t = O(1), accurate asymptotic solutions lead to transport equations similar to those valid in the case of wave trains (see [D. Alterman and J. Rauch, J. Differential Equations, 178 (2002), pp. 437–465]). The opposite is true here. The profile equation for pulses for t = O(1/ε) is different from the corresponding equation for wave trains. Formal asymptotics leads to equations for a leading term in the expansion and for correctors. The equations for the correctors are in general not solvable, being plagued by small divisor problems in the continuous spectrum. This makes the construction of accurate approximations subtle. We use low-frequency cutoffs depending on ε to avoid the small divisors.

Focusing of Spherical Nonlinear Pulses In

This paper describes the behavior of spherical pulse solutions of semilinear wave equations in the limit of short wavelength. In three space dimensions we study the behavior of solutions which are described by nonlinear geometric optics away from the focal point. With a natural subcriticality hypothesis on the nonlinearity we prove that the possibly nonlinear eeects at the focal point do not aa...

Wavelength tuning of femtosecond pulses generated in nonlinear crystals by using diffractive lenses.

We demonstrate that diffractive lenses (DLs) can be used as a simple method to tune the central wavelength of femtosecond pulses generated from second-order nonlinear optical processes in birefringent crystals. The wavelength tunability is achieved by changing the relative distance between the nonlinear crystal and the DL, which acts in a focusing configuration. Besides the many practical appli...

Synthesis of fractal light pulses by quasi-direct space-to-time pulse shaping.

We demonstrated a simple diffractive method to map the self-similar structure shown in squared radial coordinate of any set of circularly symmetric fractal plates into self-similar light pulses in the corresponding temporal domain. The space-to-time mapping of the plates was carried out by means of a kinoform diffractive lens under femtosecond illumination. The spatio-temporal characteristics o...

Nonlinear geometric optics for reflecting uniformly stable pulses

We provide a justification with rigorous error estimates showing that the leading term in weakly nonlinear geometric optics expansions of highly oscillatory reflecting pulses is close to the uniquely determined exact solution for small wavelengths ε. Pulses reflecting off fixed noncharacteristic boundaries are considered under the assumption that the underlying boundary problem is uniformly spe...
